The rumored decision to install Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton as the new Director of the CIA has caused quite a buzz in political circles over the past few days, and already many are speculating on who might be in line to replace the stalwart supporter of our President on Capitol Hill.
One of those believed to be in the mix for the Senate spot is none other than Sarah Huckabee Sanders, and many in the know think that she might already be gathering her political clout to make such a move. Aside from serving as the White House Spokeswoman, Sanders had previously served as campaign manager for Arkansas’ other senator, Republican John Boozman, giving her a powerful ally should she decide to go ahead and bid for the nomination.
She wouldn’t be alone with Boozman as her ally either. “I would support Sarah in a New York minute!” former U.S. Rep. Tommy Robinson, an Arkansas Democrat turned Republican, told reporters. And, of course, she would also have the support of her father, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, giving her even more pull in her home state.
Others, however, are not so sure about whether or not she will go for it. Former Arkansas Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor told reporters for the Washington Examiner that he “would be surprised if Sarah Sanders is the choice or if she is interested.” He then went on to say “in all likelihood, the Cotton vacancy would trigger a Republican scramble here,” and thinks that the frontrunners for the spot would be U.S. Rep. Steve Womack, U.S. Rep. French Hill, or Lt. Gov. Tim Griffin, among others. Sanders, for her part, has been unavailable for comment on the situation.
The dramatic moves in the Senate, of course, would only be made possible if the rumors about the potential sacking of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson prove to be true. According to White House insiders, it is believed that Tillerson will be replaced by current CIA Director Mike Pompeo, and Trump will give Pompeo’s spot to current Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton. Whether or not this proves to play out, or if it is just nothing more than sheer gossip remains to be seen, however, and President Trump has remained silent on the topic.
