ESPN was forced to cut more than 150 employees this week amidst tanking ratings and falling profits, and shortly after the news broke an internal memo from ESPN president John Skipper went public, giving onlookers a better look at what is going on within the company.
After announcing his intentions to fire 150 people, Skipper states “We appreciate their contributions, and will assist them as much as possible in this difficult moment with severance, a 2017 bonus, the continuation of health benefits and outplacement services.” He then goes on to say that the majority of the firings were coming from the studio production, digital content, and technology departments and that the decisions made to remove the employees “generally reflect decisions to do less in certain instances and re-direct resources.”
This latest round of layoffs is the second major cutback in employees this year, and many recall this past April, when ESPN was once again forced to shed nearly a hundred employees due to falling viewership. This latest purge did not directly affect many on-air personalities, but it still does much to show just how far the company has fallen, compared to the days when it was the go-to channel for sports fans across the county.
Many people blame ESPN’s decision to get involved in politics as a major reason for their loss of viewership. In the wake of things such as the Jemele Hill controversy, when an ESPN contributor called President Trump a white supremacist, as well as the decision to pull Asian-American reporter Robert Lee from the coverage of a football game for fears that some might find his name offensive, millions of once loyal subscribers have made the decision to abandon the network, and are getting their sports news from other outlets.
ESPN and the NFL need to learn that the American people don’t want to hear liberal propaganda spewed out of their TV screens every time they turn on a sports game. When we settle down to watch a ball game, we want to do just that, watch the game, and not be inundated with a flood of leftist garbage. Maybe ESPN will get smart and realize that, but if history is any indicator, it looks like they are going to keep losing viewers and cutting employees until there is no one left at the company at all.
