This past weekend the Trump administration reaffirmed its commitment to putting America first when it pulled out of an Obama era U.N. agreement on migration and refugees, telling the members of the United Nations that the US would be deciding its own policies concerning immigration, and it wasn’t about to bow to the will of others.
“Our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone,” U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley told those assembled. “We will decide how best to control our borders and who will be allowed to enter our country.”
The agreement that Haley was speaking about was the New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants, which was adopted by the outgoing Obama administration last September. That declaration, which the UN says will provide “a significant opportunity to improve the governance on migration, to address the challenges associated with today’s migration, and to strengthen the contribution of migrants and migration to sustainable development,” would mean that the US would need to accept refugees and migrants each year by UN mandate. Trump, however, was not about to let such an egregious violation of our sovereignty fly.
“While we will continue to engage on a number of fronts at the United Nations,” Secretary of State Rex Tillerson confirmed in a statement released Sunday, “in this case, we simply cannot in good faith support a process that could undermine the sovereign right of the United States to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders.”
Tillerson went on to say that while the US supports “international cooperation on migration issues…but it is the primary responsibility of sovereign states to help ensure that migration is safe, orderly, and legal.”
With this latest move, President Trump has shown the world that he really does plan on putting America first and has no intentions of letting politicians in Europe or anywhere else tell us how to run our country. This is a far cry from the days of Obama, when it seemed like every other day this country was making concessions to the rest of the world, undermining our sovereignty one pen stroke at a time.
